When Koenma called them in for a special assignment, Kurama had to admit, he was mildly annoyed. Hiei was just pissed, and Kuwabara and Yusuke were somewhere in between.

"Seriously, Koenma, this is our weekend off." Yusuke griped.

"Yes, and we have quite a situation." Koenma retorted. "It can't be helped."

"Okay, what kind of situation?"

"Kids are disappearing at an alarming rate. Seven at a time."

The team as a whole exchanged slightly baffled looks. Kurama gave Koenma a confused look. "Kids are disappearing in groups of seven?"

"Yes. And we have nothing to go on other than we know that the kids are disappearing in a city called Kaku Ren Bo." Koenma sat back, his eyes flicking over the team to stare over their heads.

Yusuke blinked. "I've never heard of a town called Kaku Ren Bo." he looked over at Kurama and Kuwabara. "Have you guys?"

Kurama considered. "I have not. Hiei?"

"No. I don't spend enough time in the human realm to aquaint myself with the names of the towns." Hiei shrugged one shoulder.

Kuwabara was frowning. "The name rings a bell, but I don't remember where I'v heard it."

Suddenly Yusuke grinned. "Kaku Ren Bo! Hide and Seek! They named a town after a kid's game? That's retarded."

"There's nothing retarded about this, Yusuke." Koenma said sharply. "Children are vanishing. Every week, seven kids. The next batch is due to disappear tonight. I want you to go to this town and find out what's happening."

Hiei turned his attention to Kurama. "Fox?"

"There's something of an urban legend at my school." Kurama explained hesitantly. "I'm wondering if it's related." Hiei indicated he should continue. Kurama explained. "In a legendary town, there is a game called otokoyo. In this game, children will disappear. Only the strongest will escape the town once the game starts."

"That sounds creepy enough to be right." Yusuke muttered. "Now that you mention it, I remember hearing about that in my school as well." Kuwabara nodded.

Hiei glanced at Kurama. "Did the legend ever say where the city is located, or how to get there?"

Yusuke frowned as he went over the legend in his mind. "If I remember right, the outskirts of the town are a maze. You have to get through the maze before you can start the game. You also have to wear a fox mask in order to play." his eyebrows drew together, trying to remember the rest of the legend. "And there can only be seven players. No more." he gave a slight smile. "I think I hit the highlights."

Kuwabara nodded. "Yeah. So we're going shopping for fox masks, aren't we?"

"Yes." Kurama glanced at Hiei. "I have a bad feeling about this."

"You and me both, fox."

Yusuke gave Koenma a look. "Anything else you can give us before we go?"

Koenma shook his head. "I've told you everything I know. Good luck."

Kuwabara smiled humorlessly. "I have a feeling we're gonna need it." he muttered, following Yusuke out the door.

"So," Hiei said, "how do we find this city? Even if the outskirts are a maze, we still need to know where to find the maze."

Kurama shrugged. "We use bait."

Yusuke blinked. "Eh?"

"Kaito was talking about it today. His friend talked him into going - according to him, his friend knows where it is and how to get there. All we must do is follow." Kurama smiled faintly. "And I know where they are meeting."

"What time?" Yusuke asked.

"6 pm. Three hours."

"That should give us time to find fox masks." Kuwabara murmured. "But are you sure we should let Kaito just walk into this?"

"I'm all for it." Hiei grumbled. "I still owe him."

Yusuke snorted. "Hiei, how about we not use the evil city that eats people for revenge?"

"Why would I do that?" Hiei asked, grinning slightly.

"Becasue it's not really your style?" Yusuke suggested, grinning back. "Besides, you're the one who thought it'd be a great idea to test the power of his territory."

"Can you blame me? He could have been bluffing." Hiei shrugged.

Kuwabara walked up beside Kurama. "I know I've said this, but I've got a really bad feeling about this. I'm starting to feel like a broken record."

Kurama laughed quietly. "You're not the only one. Hiei and I are also wary of the city - we have a feeling we're going to be getting more than we bargained for."

Yusuke looked back. "I'm wondering what you think about having to wear a fox mask. Ya know, considering you're a fox demon."

"So long as no one starts snickering - "

Hiei snorted. "This from the demon who wore a fox mask to a masquerade ball."

Kurama laughed. "It worked, didn't it?"

"And how no one knew it was you at first - "

"I did get found out!"

"Only after your hair fell out of the back of the mask!"

By this time Yusuke and Kuwabara were cracking up. "Come on, guys. Let's just do this, okay?"

"Yeah, fine." Kurama sighed. "Hiei, I strongly suspect there will be running and screaming later today."

"Only suspect?"

Yusuke led the way into a costume shop, and headed for the masks. He tossed one to Kuwabara, Hiei and Kurama before grabbing one himself. "All right - think these fit the requirement?"

Hiei was inspecting his mask. "I don't like it. The eyeholes are too small. It limits my range of vision." he said, holding the mask up. "Not to mention, I feel rediculous."

Kuwabara snorted. "You look it, too."

"Shut up, oaf. Or did you forget your atrocious hairstyle?"

"Okay, tiny! Let's go!"

Yuskue gave Kurama a dry look. "It's like babysitting toddlers. They fight about everything."

Kurama just shook his head and switched masks with Hiei. "Try that one."

Hiei slipped it on. "Better. At least I can see." Kurama nodded and tried on his mask. Hiei was right - the eyeholes were way too small, but Kurama was used to compensating with his other senses. Hiei just rolled his eyes and snatched another mask off the rack. "This one, you dumb fox."

"Love you too, Hiei." He tried it on. "Much better."

"Told you."

"Okay - let's pay for these and get out of here." Yusuke grinned.

The clerk rose an eyebrow as they set the masks down. "Wow, you guys are the third group to come in here and buy these. Is there some kind of party going on?" he asked as he rang up the total.

"Nah - they're for a class project." Yuskue said easily, digging in his wallet for his money.

"Huh. Anyway, good luck, and have a good day."

Yuskue glanced over at the others as they left the store. "Okay - so, do we head out there now? It's pushing five-thirty."

Hiei nodded. "If we want to be part of the game, we have to leave now. Otherwise, we could well lose our chance to get in."

Yusuke nodded. "All right, let's get this over with."

They found Kaito easily enough. He and his friend stood there at the bridge. Kaito grinned when he saw Kurama. "I had a feeling you would show, Suiichi."

"You knew I was listening?"

"Of course. I was actually hoping you'd show." Kaito grinned. "Care for a game of nerves?"

"Only if it involves ripping yours out." Hiei growled.

Yusuke rolled his eyes. "Play nice, children."

Kurama ignored them. "You need to leave. This game is more dangerous than you believe."

"But you need me to find the city."

"No. We just need directions."

Hiei rolled his eyes. "If we could dispense with the contest, we have a mission to do."

Kaito looked at the four of them. "I want in."

"No." Yuskue said flatly. "And if you try, I'll knock you out."

"You still need directions to the city."

Hiei opened his eyes to stare at Kaito. "No, not anymore."

"Why not?"

"I've got the directions." Hiei's Jagan eye stopped glowing, and closed. "Come on. The sooner we go, the sooner we can leave."

Kuwabara smiled. "I'd forgotten you could do that, Hiei."

"Yes, well, I don't advertise." Hiei said dryly.

Kurama just smiled faintly. "Don't follow us, Kaito."

Kaito scowled. "I want - "

"No. You don't know what's in this city."

"More freaks like us? What does it matter?"

"It's not a game."

"You don't know that!"

Hiei rolled his eyes and suddenly Kaito dropped to the ground, unconsious. His friend soon followed. Kurama sighed. "Thank you."

"Arguing was getting us nowhere."

"Agreed." He motioned to Hiei. "Lead the way."

Hiei led them to the city, entering the outskirts just as the sun was beginning to set. He turned to Kurama and Yusuke. "You two are the closest thing we have to experts on this game. What now?"

Kurama was looking around. "Now we find the symbols for o, to, ko, and yo. We follow them, and they'll lead us to - get this, Otokoyo square. That's where the game begins."

Kuwabara nodded. "Well then, there's the symbol for O. Let's get going."

They ran down the alley, turning whenever one of the symbols lit up. Yusuke frowned. "Is it me, or is it really dark for it to be twilight?"

Kurama turned left as another symbol lit up. "It's not just you. The lighting keeps shifting."

"Oh, good. Turn right!" The last turn spit them out at the edge of the square. Hiei did a quick head-count.

"We've got seven, counting us."

"Actually, we have eight." Kurama pointed to a young girl standing off by herself. "Why are there eight?"

"Maybe someone doesn't know how to count." Hiei muttered. "It doesn't matter. Looks like the game is starting."

"Hiei. I don't like this." Kurama looked ready to bolt, hackles raised and teeth bared, even if it was hidden behind the mask. Hiei could feel his distress. He reached out with his mind in an attempt to soothe his pack mate.

"I don't like this either. Let's just finish it."

"Quickly." Kurama agreed. He looke over at Yusuke and Kuwabara. "We'll split up. You and Kuwabara, and myself and Hiei. Whoever finds something first, send out a flare of spirit energy. We'll feel it and head your way."

Yusuke nodded. "Sounds good. Good luck, you two."

"The same to you. Be careful."

Hiei and Kurama turned left as Yusuke and Kuwabara turned right.

Hiei glanced over to the side and stopped. He tilted his head as he studied the statue. "I don't recoginze him."

"Neither do I."

"Should I poke it?"

"NO!"

Hiei glanced at Kurama. "Bad?"

"Very bad. Everything in me is screaming to take you and run."

Hiei looked back at the statue. "Then let's get out of here."

As they walked away, the thing's eyes started to glow.

"Did it get brighter back there?" Hiei wondered.

"I'm not turning around to find out." Kurama muttered darkly. "Let's just go."

Hiei, being the curious apparition that he was, turned around. He stopped dead in his tracks, eyes wide. Kurama looked at him. "It's behind me, isn't it?"

"Yes."

"Should we run?"

"I'm considering it."

"If you're considering it, I'm doing it." Without looking back, Kurama grabbed Hiei's wrist and took off, dragging the fire apparition for a few steps before Hiei took the lead.

Behind them, the statue roared and gave chase.

Hiei risked a look back and then growled. "Fox."

"Yes?"

"Hang on." With that, Hiei grabbed Kurama and lifted him, running faster now that he didn't have to worry about leaving Kurama behind.

Kurama's grip tightened painfully, but didn't say anything. Hiei glanced back. "Can you slow it down?"

"Let me get my rose free, and yes."

"Then do it. I can't keep this speed up for long."

Kurama pulled his rose out and flicked it, before swinging it at the statue's legs. The thorns cut through the stone, sending the statue crashing to the ground. Hiei put on an extra burst of speed and leaped, landing on the relative safety of the roof. He set Kurama down, then jerked his head.

"Come on. That won't stop him."

Kurama glanced down at the monster. His eyes widened. "It has no spirit energy. Did you notice?"

"Wasn't paying attention, fox." Hiei muttered. "Let's get inside, shall we?" Kurama nodded mutely and followed Hiei down the stairs and into the building.

"Now we know why children disappear."

Hiei snorted. "Now we just have to find out how to stop it."

Hiei followed Kurama into the building, going straight to the window and looking out. His eyes widened. "Fox, get down."

"Why?"

"The statue's coming." Hiei said, dropping out of sight under the window. Kurama joined him, swearing profusely through their bond.

Hiei stifled a laugh as red light flooded the room, the statue searching for them. The light faded as the statue moved on, growling and roaring as it went. Kurama very carefully stood and peeked out the window.

"It's gone." he said quietly.

"Good. Let's put some distance between it and us."

There was a quiet giggle behind them. Hiei drew his sword as Kurama drew his whip and spun around. There was nothing there.

Hiei glanced at Kurama. "Please tell me I was not the only one to hear that."

"You weren't."

Something caught Hiei's attention. "Fox. Look." Tacked to the wall was what could almost be called a flyer.

Kurama walked over to it and looked. "These are the names of demons." he said quietly. Hiei frowned.

"Liver-taker, blood-taker - no demons I've ever heard of."

"Only traditional demons." Kurama corrected. "Not the real ones. I believe we just encountered the blood-taker."

"I'd rather keep my blood." Hiei frowned. "Mythological demons, creatures with no spirit energy - "

"I know. It makes no sense."

Then they heard the giggle again.

Hiei nodded as he looked around. "We'll talk more about them as we go. Come on, I have a feeling we're about to encounter something else if we don't leave."

"Agreed. Let's try to get to the center of the city." Kurama headed for the stairs, eyes glowing a faint gold.

"Fox, are you aware your eyes are changing?"

"Yes. I'm relying on Youko's reflexes and speed. My normal speeds and reflexes aren't going to be enough."

"All right. Let's go." Hiei drew his sword and led the way down the stairs. Kurama's hand fell on his shoulder, tightening to signal him to stop. "What?"

"There's something out there. I can hear it."

"Demon, or human?"

"I don't know. I can't scent it, and I sense no spirit energy."

"Is it a threat?"

"I can't tell."

Hiei was clearly aware of how agitated Kurama really was. Without spirit energy and no scent, the fox was misisng half the data he would use to assess a situation. Hiei decided to take the lead. After all, if it turned out to be unfriendly, he could move faster than Kurama. "Come on. There's nothing we can do but go forward."

Kurama nodded. Still, he kept a tight grip on Hiei's shoulder. As they got farther down the stairs, they felt it.

Yusuke's energy, bright and desperate.

"North." Kurama said.

"Nothing we can do about it now." Hiei gritted out. "Damn this place."

They hit the bottom of the stairs. Hiei glanced back. "I'll step out first and give you the all clear. Then we make our way to Yusuke."

Kurama nodded once, tension clear in his body and movements. His grip tightened once on Hiei's shoulder before he let go altogether and stepped back. Hiei gathered himself and stepped out, gaze moving left to right before motioning Kurama forward. "Let's go."

They took off, the echo of their footsteps unusually loud in the quiet around them. There was a muted scream to their left, followed by a roar. They didn't stop, heading straight for Yusuke's energy.

Kurama's nose flared, and he jerked his head to the left. "This way. He's on the move."

"Following you. Your sense of smell is stronger than mine." Hiei followed Kurama, leaping over debris lining the alley.

"I can't scent Kuwabara." Kurama's brows furrowed. "That's unusual."

"Think that's why the detective signaled us?"

"Might be."

Hiei frowned. "I don't like the idea of something capturing the oaf. That doesn't bode well for the rest of us."

"I wonder how many are left." Kurama murmured. "If we started off with eight - "

"Don't think on it." Hiei advised. "We'll find out what's happening here."

Suddenly they both pulled up short. "Yusuke's scent just vanished." Kurama said.

"So did his energy." Hiei added. "What the - "

Kurama shoved Hiei to the ground. His whip cracked out. "Run!"

Once again they took off, a new kind of 'demon' on their trail.
