Don't Fear the Reaper Empty
PostSubject: Don't Fear the Reaper   Don't Fear the Reaper I_icon_minitimeWed Aug 20, 2014 11:59 pm

By the time Heather got back from class, she was hot, tired, and only a little aggravated. Her physics lab is a stuffy place anyway, and if there's one thing she absolutely cannot stand, it's group work. The walk across the street to the apartment she shares with her best friend helps a little. She opens the door. "You in?" she calls out.

"Yeah." Jess calls from her bedroom. "I got Rae on the phone. Give me a sec and I'll put her on speaker."

Heather grins. If there's one thing guaranteed to cheer her up, it's listening to Jess and Raven bicker on the phone.

Jess hit the button and sat back, a faint grin on her face. "Say hi, Rae!"

There was an exasperated sigh on the other end of the line. "Hey, Heather. How's it going?" Raven said, the grin in her voice evident.

"Not bad. Hate group work, but what can you do?"

Raven laughed, before sobering. "Okay, real quick. Can you two do me a huge favor?"

Jess and Heather blinked at each other before looking back at the phone. Jess spoke, her tone cautious. "Um, sure?"

"Don't go to class tomorrow. Apparently there's been a few murders. The police are saying there's a killer out there, but I know some people who say it's something else. So until it's been taken care of, do me a favor, and stay away from Santa Fe for the next few days."

Jess and Heather exchanged frowns. "Um, you know mid-terms are this week, right? Rae, they're a huge part of our grade." Heather pointed out. "We can't really afford to miss them."

"Well, I'd rather you two fail than get killed." Rae shot back. "Just, please don't go."

Jess shrugs. "She has a point."

Heather makes a face. "Rae, are you getting this from your Roadhouse friends?"

"And if I am?" Rae retorts. "It doesn't change the fact that there's someone killing people on campus, and you two are disaster magnets."

"Gee, thanks Rae." Jess says dryly. "We'll stay off-campus. Don't worry about us."

Raven sighs. "Thanks."

Heather glances at Jess and grins. She recognizes that look. There is no way in hell they're staying off-campus.

Rae and Jess say their goodbyes, and once the phone is hung up, Jess looks over at Heather. "So, whaddya say? Wanna go check it out?"

"Heck yeah!" Heather says with a grin. "But I think we'd better do a little studying up. 'Cause if it's something that Rae's friends deal with, we're gonna need a lot more than a knife. Let me do a little reading up on it, and see what I can find."

Jess laughed. "Sounds like a plan to me. Gimme a few of your books, and I'll help."

Heather heads to her room and pulls out a box from under her bed. There's a stash of books and weapons in there that aren't mandatory for school. Raven gave them enough to protect themselves if anything should find them, but they've never actively hunted something down before. She brings the box into Jess's room and sets it on the bed.

"Take your pick."

Jess's eyes widen. "These aren't all from Rae."

"It' amazing what you can find on Ebay."

Jess laughed as she chose a book on mythology and one on angels and demons, and began flipping through the pages. "Why am I not surprised?"

"Because my interests are wide and varied?" Heather said, grabbing a couple of books at random and settling across from Jess on the bed. They began reading, speaking every now and then to alleviate the quiet. Heather made a small noise in the back of her throat, getting Jess's attention.

"What's up?"

"I'm reading about the trickster, Loki. Well, there are a few patterns here that kinda remind me of the way the people at the college died. There are some similarities, but not enough for me to be one hundred percent sure that it's a trickster."

Jess scooted over to read over Heather's shoulder. Her brow furrowed. "Okay, assuming it is a trickster, how do we kill it?"

"Beats me."

Jess snorts. "Real helpful, Heather."

"I'm serious. I haven't gotten that far yet." Heather protests. "Besides, most of these books are 'here's what to avoid', not 'go out and kill'. I'm pretty sure you learn that trial-and-error."

"We do that we'll get killed." Jess says mildly, flipping through another book. "We need a more solid plan."

"Well, this says you can kill it with a stake of balsa wood." She points at the sketch. "Where we'll find that I don't know."

"How about we just use our knives and hope we don't run into the thing tonight?" Jess suggests. "Then we can scope out the school and find it's hiding spot. Maybe clue some of Raven's friends in."

"Sounds like a plan."

(I honestly don't remember what kind of stake was supposed to kill the trickster)

Jess grabbed her dagger, and grinned as Heather dug out her knife. "We're so badass." Jess said, a faintly mocking tone to her voice.

"Actually, I think the word we're looking for here is stupid. Most girls, when faced with the possibility of running into something that could kill them would stay home. We're going out looking for it." Heather said with a laugh.

Jess gave a careless shrug. "So we're not that bright. We knew that."

Heather laughed and shoved Jess out the door. "Let's go before I change my mind. My alarms are already going off."

Jess grinned as she fell into step with Heather. "Oh, well, I would hate for our adventure to come to an end so soon."

"Shut up."

"You know, it's a good thing most people aren't on campus this time of day." Heather muses. "I would hate to have to explain why I'm waling around with a giant military knife."

"You brought that thing?"

"I am not going after supernatural evil with a pig sticker."

"Yeah, but there is a size in between pig sticker and insane."

"If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing."

"This is not the Mythbusters."

The two of them fall silent as they enter the art wing. The area is completely abandoned, as all the students have gone home by now. Only one light is on. Heather silently motions for Jess to follow her, and the two of them sneak silently down the hall.

Jess looks around as they round a corner. "This place is so creepy after dark." she said, her voice barely more than a whisper.

Heather laughed quietly. "Tell me about it." she froze. "Please tell me you heard that."

Jess stopped moving. "Heard what?" she asked, looking around suspiciously. The sound of a shoe scuffing along the tile a little further down had both girls stiffening and pressing their backs to the wall. "I heard that."

Heather peeked around the corner. "There's nothing there." she said, Jess peeking around the wall above her.

"Are you two looking for me?"

Both Jess and Heather jumped a mile in the air, shrieking as they spun around to face whoever had spoken. Both girls had their knives out and pointed at the guy.

The stranger holds his hands up, laughing at them. "Are those for me?"

"That depends." Jess says shakily. "Are you human?"

"Jess!" Heather hisses, eyes flickering back and forth between the two.

The stranger grins. "Maybe."

"I'll take that as a no." Jess mutters.

The guy laughs again. "Mind explaining why you came looking for me?"

Jess shoots a glance at Heather before glaring at the guy. "No, not really. Mind explaining why you killed all those people?"

The guy's grin gets wider. "No, not really." Jess scowled at him, not really appreciating the use of her own phrase.

Heather cocked her head to the side. "You're a trickster, right? Deadly pranks and all that."

The guy nods, giving them both a second look-over. "You two hunters?"

"Maybe." Heather says, rocking back on her heels, giving the guy a slight grin.

He started to laugh. "I really like the two of you! I don't think I'll kill you after all. I was considering it, though." he said, eyeing the two of them. "Woulda been fun. But I like you two a bit more than I thought I would."

"Goody for us." Jess muttered sarcastically under her breath.

"She actually really means that." Heather says, lowering her knife. "You weren't supposed to find us this fast."

The Trickster grins. "You must be newbies then. Not that it matters - most experienced hunters don't like to come across something like me. Personally, I think it's because I'm awesome."

That makes both girls laugh. Slowly, they relax. "Okay, so you aren't gonna kill us." Jess says. "What now?"

The man shrugs. "We could always exchange names and Facebook accounts." he teases.

Once again, the girls exchange looks. Jess arches an eyebrow. Heather merely shrugs. "I'm Heather." she says. "This is Jess. Neither of us are on Facebook."

That just makes the Trickster laugh again.

Jess eyed the trickster warily, wondering to herself what exactly the trickster planned to do when she and Heather tried to leave. The trickster met her gaze, and gave her a crooked smile.

"Wondering if I'm gonna kill you when you try to leave?"

Jess blinked in surprise, then narrowed her eyes. "Stay out of my head."

Heather looked between the two of them. "Jess?" she cocked her head to the side, leaving the rest of the question unspoken. Jess glanced at her and nodded. Heather nodded once and relaxed. Slightly.

The trickster rose both eyebrows. "Silent communication? That's actually kinda cool. You can leave, I won't hurt you. But I do have a question. You two are newbie hunters, right? What if I told you I can help you become better?"

"Why should we trust you?" Jess shot back.

The trickster smiled. "Sweetie, you already do. Otherwise, you wouldn't have put your knife away."

Jess glanced down, as if only just realizing that she did indeed put her knife away. Heather has done the same. Once again, they exchange looks. This time Jess tilts her head. Heather just raises one eyebrow. Jess shrugs. Heather rolls her eyes before turning her attention back to the Trickster.

"If you're gonna train us, we need to go someplace safer." she says. "If we found you just by stumbling around, someone better trained than us can find you no problem."

The Trickster considers that. "Then lead away." he says.

Jess leaned over and tipped her head onto Heather's shoulder. "Are we taking him back to the apartment?" she asked quietly.

"Yeah. It's safer than here. I don't think Rae's hunter buddies will show up there unless she asks them to check up on us." Heather said with a faint shrug. "It was the best I could think of off the top of my head."

"Works for me. I would say I'd feel bad for stuffing him under my bed if Rae's friends come over, but in reality, I wouldn't feel that bad."

The trickster gave them an amused grin. "I can hear you, you know."

"We know. We just don't care." Jess said airily.

"Clearly." The trickster said with a grin.

The trickster slides up in between them. "So - what makes some wanna-be hunters decide they can trust the Trickster who keeps killing people?" he asks, and for the first time there seems to be a hint of seriousness in his tone. Heather and Jess exchange looks.

"Call it intuition." Heather says finally. "You can do bad things and not be a bad person."

"Although you probably are anyway." Jess continues. "Which says more about us than it does about you."

"Namely that we make shitty hunters." Heather finishes. "I mean, really, anyone else and we'd be dead."

"Good thing it was me you found." the Trickster says.

"Speaking of." Heather says. "You never told us your name."

The trickster's grin goes a little crooked. "Call me Gabe."

Jess and Heather exchange a look. "Gabe. Short for Gabriel?"

Gabe grins. "Yep." he said, popping the 'p' at the end of it.

Jess eyes him suspiciously. "You're not the archangel, are you?"

Gabe burst out laughing. "Oh, hell no! Do I look like an angel to you?!"

"Well, no. . ."

"Besides, angels don't go around killing people." Jess muses. Heather arches an eyebrow at her.

"Have you read the Old Testament?"

"Not recently." Jess retorts.

Heather ignores her and returns her attention to Gabe. "Here's the bigger question - why did you decide you like us?"

Gabe offers a half-grin. "Because you got spunk? You went after a trickster with two pig stickers. That's some balls right there. That kind of bravery deserves some training to keep it alive."

"That wasn't bravery." Jess says. "That was stupidity."

Gabe grins. "You say to-ma-to, I say to-may-to." he said in a sing-song voice.

Jess rolled her eyes and grinned as she dug the keys to their apartment out. Gabe looked around. "Huh, you guys are right across the street from campus. Must be handy."

"Sometimes." Heather said, leading the way into the apartment. She kicked her shoes off and gave Gabe an expectant look. "You said you could help us."

Gabe looked around, an eyebrow shooting up to his hairline."You two have a fascination with the occult, right?
That'll help."

Jess nods. "Fascination is one way to phrase it."

"Obsession is the other." Heather says. "Her sister is a hunter. She taught us enough to not walk into a trap, and we did the rest of the digging on our own."

Gabe nods. "Can you fight?"

Jess shrugs. "I've been in a few scraps. Heather has training."

"Never fought though." Heather says. "So everything I know is theoretical at best."

Gabe considers this. "What about guns?"

That earns him identical shit-eating grins. He laughs. "Okay - that's even better."

Jess grins back and leans comfortably against a wall. She shoots Heather a grin. "Speaking of Rae, when she hears about this, she's gonna have a fit. That's not stopping me, obviously, but I feel like I should warn you when the shit hits the fan." she considered. "We might actually come to blows about this."

Heather grinned back. "I know. I'm just wondering if I'm gonna have to scrape you off the ceiling."

"Nah - just clean the wounds she leaves." Jess said with a laugh.

Gabe gave her a look. "Rae would be whom?"

"My sister. Her name's Raven, but everyone calls her Rae." Jess said cheerfully. "I'm older than she is, but she's meaner than I am."

"From what I gathered, she doesn't hunt often, but she has a territory she keeps clean." Heather explains. "Unless that's changed since then?" she directs that last part to Jess, who shrugs.

"Well, her territory expanded when we went to school, so who knows now?"

"Good point. She gathers strays like we do."

Gabe is still grinning. "Sounds like my kind of girl."

"I think you would get along, as soon as we get her past the whole Trickster-who-was-killing-people bit." Heather says gamely. "Speaking of, you gonna teach us anything or are we gonna just stand here swapping stories?"

"Show him the books." Jess says. "That way he knows what we know. I'll call Rae and let her know we're still alive. Just don't get to the good stuff without me."

As Jess turned to grab her phone, someone started to bang on their door. "Heather, Jess! Open up!"

Jess whipped around and stared at the door. "And apparently, Rae's here." She shot Heather a grin. "Go get the first aid kit. Gabe, you're about to meet Rae." the banging on the door continued. "I'm coming! Don't beat my door down!"
She flung open the door, and gave Raven a flat stare. "Was pounding on our door really necessary?"

"Yes. Did you two seriously go looking for -" Raven trailed off as her gaze fell on Gabe. She glanced over at Jess. "Please tell me that's a classmate of yours, and not what I think it is."

Gabe grinned. "She's cute. I can see the resemblance." he said, looking between Jess and Raven. He looked at Heather. "So, show me the books?"

"Yep. C'mon, let's let those two duke it out. Trust me, we don't wanna get in the middle." Heather said with a grin. She looked over at Jess and Raven. "Try not to stain the carpet."

"YOU GUYS BROUGHT A TRICKSTER HOME WITH YOU?! HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MINDS?!" Raven roared, rounding on Jess. "I thought you guys had more sense than that!"

Heather closes the door quickly behind her and Gabe. "Hopefully that doesn't go to blows." she mutters.

Gabe nods. "So why bring me home if you knew it would upset her?" he asks.

"Because the same thing happened to all three of us, and yet Rae thought she could hide the truth of it and keep us out of the hunting business." Heather says shortly. "We love her to death, but we're a little peeved with her. So we've been looking for an excuse to get started. You're handy." She pulls out the box of books. "This is what we've had to work with."

Gabe sits on the bed and flips through the books. For a few minutes, all is silence except for Rae and Jess yelling at each other in the living room. Heather listens closely enough to make sure they aren't going to kill each other. Rae is pissed, and Jess is getting there herself, but they haven't reached livid yet.

"Well, you definitely have a good foundation." Gabe says finally. "How did you manage to sort through all the crap out there and find good books?"

"I have an awesome bullshit detector."

That makes Gabe laugh. "I love that."
